It was a wild weekend with two truly tremendous preliminary finals. Fremantle stormed home from 28 points down to beat Sydney on Friday night, then Brisbane outlasted Hawthorn in a classic prelim that'll be argued about for years. Now it's the minor premiers against the three-peat-chasing reigning champs on Saturday 26 September, 2:30pm AEST.
But as the old song we used to hear every Thursday night told us time and time again – it’s more than a game. On the field, they’re chasing a flag. But at home, at packed pubs and BBQs, the real story is what a Grand Final win means to a player's legacy. It’s legacy that earns legendary status, and that’s what collectors are really buying. Premierships, Norm Smith Medals and "first ever" moments tend to keep cards relevant long after the siren. Here's who's got the most riding on it.
Only Brisbane's 2001–03 side and Hawthorn's 2013–15 side have pulled off a three-peat this century. A third straight flag turns a great team into a dynasty.
Lachie Neale: Dual Brownlow Medallist (2020, 2023) and a two-time premiership player. Here's the twist: he played 135 games for Fremantle and was the sub in their 2013 Grand Final loss as a 20-year-old. Beating his old club for a three-peat? That's a legacy chapter that writes itself.
Will Ashcroft: The Lions are chasing a rare premiership three-peat. But Will Ashcroft is chasing a first-ever Norm Smith three-peat. That’s the sort of achievement that sends a player’s value into the stratosphere.
Harris Andrews: Co-captain of the last two premierships. A third puts him firmly in the "dynasty captain" conversation.
The Dockers have never won a premiership. This is only their second Grand Final, and their first since 2013. A win means this group never pays for a beer in Freo again, and could send card values northward.
Shai Bolton: Shifted forward against Sydney and kicked two in the comeback. A big Grand Final moment from him could become the highlight everyone remembers.
Caleb Serong: Pick 8 in the 2019 draft, and he played his 150th game in that prelim. A premiership this early would be a serious start to a legacy.
Luke Jackson: The ruckman grew up a Freo fan and has been to a Grand Final before, with Melbourne in 2021. Now the hometown hero gets a chance to deliver the Dockers their first-ever flag.
Let's be straight: a flag doesn't automatically send a card to the moon. Print runs, condition and hobby demand all matter, and nobody can call the market. But storylines like a first-ever premiership, a dynasty or a Norm Smith performance are exactly what collectors chase.
If you're eyeing a player, decide who you'd want in your collection, win or lose. Set a budget, and don't panic-buy on Saturday night.
